Research

The research programme that Professor Rami Abboud established on Biomechanics and Motion Analysis in the late 1980s led in 1993 to the foundation of the Foot Pressure Analysis Lab/Clinic and subsequently in 2003 to the Institute of Motion Analysis & Research (IMAR)  taking the leading role as founder, director and honorary Consultant Clinical Scientist at NHS Tayside until his resignation in June 2019. IMAR's main goal is to promote excellence in teaching and research and to provide a comprehensive clinical service in the fields of Motion Analysis and Biomechanics. The research focuses on important aspects of daily activities in relation to posture,  movement  and ergonomics, with emphasis placed on sports and disability. The overall aim is to alleviate pain, correct deformity and enhance performance. Professor Abboud supervised over 250 students in all degrees (21 MBChB 4th-year, 82 BMSc, 120  MCh Orth , 19  MSc , 4  MD , 16  PhD ) which have yielded over 400 academic disseminations in the form of peer ‐ reviewed articles, conference presentations, keynote lectures, educational modules and book chapters. This has been possible through the focussed management of a dedicated multidisciplinary team of surgeons, engineers, and allied health professionals (nurses, podiatrists, orthotists, prosthetists, physiotherapists) consisting of over 20 academics (most on honorary unpaid contracts) and professional staff at the Department and IMAR.
