The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Balamand Secured ABET BS Re-Accreditation with No Deficiencies, No Weaknesses and No Concerns and with Two Strengths!

The University of Balamand’s (UOB) Faculty of Engineering (FOE) has reached another remarkable milestone, cementing itself as a leading institution for engineering education. We are proudly announcing ABET’s ( Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ) re-accreditation for all our 5 Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in Civil, Electrical, Chemical, Computer, and Mechanical Engineering respectively, with No Deficiencies, No Weaknesses, and No Concerns and being recognized with two official strengths in Civil Engineering from 1st October 2025 to 30th September 2031. This achievement is the first in Lebanon as per the ABET’s accrediting committee, positioning our faculty of engineering amongst the top and few engineering faculties worldwide that have managed to achieve this feast of “triple No” and with 2 official strengths.

The Civil Engineering program was specifically commended for its strong relationship with the local Civil Engineering and construction industry, and the outstanding performance of its students in national and international competitions, particularly with the American Concrete Institute ( ACI ):
  1. Students compete in international competitions and have won awards, including the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Excellent/ Outstanding University Award for University Student Activities in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023. Active participation in student chapters and competitions, such as the ACI's Concrete Solutions Competition, enhances the overall undergraduate student experience, nurtures future industry leaders, and provides valuable feedback in the attainment of student outcomes.
  2. The program has established a strong relationship with the local civil engineering and construction industry. Students regularly visit construction sites, cement factories, and other civil engineering sites. Additionally, practicing civil engineers regularly visit the campus and share practical aspects of the profession with students. Students reported having five site visits and five industry lectures occur each semester. This exposure to the profession prepares students for engineering practice and enhances employment opportunities.
Despite the devastating war that struck Lebanon late last year, the Faculty of Engineering demonstrated unmatched determination and excellence, preparing for this major evaluation entirely virtually. The rigorous four-day ABET review (November 17–20, 2024) highlighted the faculty’s resilience, innovation, and commitment to quality education even in times of crisis. The ABET team reviewed the curriculum, the faculty members, existing students, alumni and industry feedbacks, and the faculty and university infrastructure in support of engineering education. The ABET Committee, consisting of 7 professors, was highly commendable on what they have witnessed describing the outcome as unique in their collective experience of over 20 years of ABET reviews worldwide.

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Vice President for Internationalization and Engagement, Professor Rami Abboud, dedicated this outstanding and extraordinary results to the entire Balamand FOE community for making history and for making Lebanon proud. Reflecting on this, Professor Abboud stated: “The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Balamand is leading by example as the 1 st faculty ever to achieve this ABET re-accreditation with No Deficiencies, No Weaknesses, and No Concerns for all its 5 BS degrees in addition to and being recognized with two official strengths in Civil Engineering. This achievement not only stands as a testament to our faculty’s continuous pursuit of excellence, innovation, and quality education, but also reaffirms the university’s leadership in engineering education setting a new benchmark for academic excellence”. This achievement would not have been possible without the unconditional support of staff and faculty members at FOE and its sister, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, as well as the administrators at the university in their various roles and specifically our President, Dr Elias Warrak, who has been a great believer in our engineering mission for a better future.
