Dr. Myriam Mrad Represents Lebanon in COP28 as MoPH Technical Advisor

The Department of Public Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences proudly announces the participation of Dr. Myriam Mrad, Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department, as a technical advisor to the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), representing Lebanon at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28. This global gathering is taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 30 to December 12, 2023, uniting leaders from around the world to address the critical issue of human interference with the climate.

The delegation from MoPH also included H.E. Dr. Firas Abiad, the Minister of Public Health, and Dr. Joyce Haddad, the Director of Preventive Healthcare at MoPH. Notably, COP28 marks the first conference with a specific focus on human health, underlining the urgency of integrating health considerations into the broader climate change discourse.

Minister Abiad will emphasize the imperative of prioritizing public health concerns within the broader discourse on climate change. Acknowledging the undeniable impact of environmental factors on human health, the Minister will advocate for proactive measures and collaborative strategies to mitigate these effects.

The Minister will stress key initiatives which aim to safeguard public health amidst environmental shifts, emphasizing the urgency of adaptation measures and the development of resilient healthcare systems.

These initiatives align with the Ministry of Public Health's commitment to promoting sustainable health practices and ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all citizens. Additionally, Dr. Abiad will participate in high-level dialogues, fostering collaborations with global stakeholders and reaffirming Lebanon's dedication to the global fight against climate change, particularly in preserving public health.

It is worth noting that earlier this year, the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health endorsed COP26 proceedings in an official letter signed and dated March 26, 2023, As part of this initiative, Lebanon committed to prioritizing the health needs of its population, while simultaneously addressing the environmental and sustainability challenges facing its healthcare facilities.

Dr. Abiad, who previously participated in the 2nd annual conference for the GEOHealth Hub on Climate Change and Health hosted by the University of Balamand – Faculty of Health Sciences on June 22, 2023, emphasized the multifaceted approach required to address the impacts of climate change. Strengthening healthcare systems, improving surveillance and response mechanisms, promoting climate resilience, and enhancing public health education were highlighted as crucial components. Dr. Abiad acknowledged the significance of partnerships between governments, universities, NGOs, and the private sector, citing the GEOHealth Hub as an exemplary model.

The Ministry of Public Health remains steadfast in its commitment to integrating climate resilience into public health policies, aligning its efforts with international agendas to safeguard the well-being of citizens and future generations.
