Department of Physical Education

The Department of Physical Education at the University of Balamand was the first in Lebanon and remains one of the few departments in the country to offer BA, MA and Teaching Diploma degrees in the field of Physical Education. It was established in recognition of the importance of sports in modern society. Its underlying aim is to raise the status and quality of physical education and educators in the interest of enhancing the quality of life for the whole community. It offers a scientifically-based program that has a notable record of improving athletic achievement in Lebanon and the Middle East region. The Department is committed to the improvement of physical performance and disease prevention through offering programs based on internationally recognized research that has practical implications in the field of health and sports.

Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education +TD

Program Objectives

  • - Prepare PE professionals who are equipped with the theoretical and practical knowledge to pursue a career in the many different fields of sports.

  • - Prepare professional coaches and instructors who can organize and manage sports acivities.


Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
  • - Demonstrate knowledge of human anatomy and physiology

  • - Demonstrate knowledge of theories of training and teaching PE

  • - Teach PE in schools and sports centers

  • - Train athletes using effective strategies

  • - Organize sports activities in different formal and informal contexts

  • - Design and administer physical performance tests

  • - Adopt an ethical stand as PE practitioners

  • - Apply the goals of the national Lebanese PE curriculum



Master of Arts in Physical Education (Physical Activity and Health)

Program Objectives

  • - To train PE professionals who can apply their knowledge in physical activity for the improvement and management of health

  • - To prepare future professionals who can work in a group or multidisciplinary network in order to maintain and improve people’s quality of life.


Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
  • - Design and conduct applied research in the field of adapted physical activity.

  • - Develop sports programs and activities to improve and manage health.

  • - Assist medical teams in presenting and implementing intervention treatment plans

  • - Propose research-based adapted physical activity programs for disease prevention

  • - Demonstrate knowledge of most common human pathologies associated with ageing and/or excess body fat.



Master of Arts in Physical Education (Physical Conditioning)

Objectives

  • - To develop skills and knowledge in physical training and coaching

  • - To enable graduates to supervise the physical training of high-level athletes and/or sports teams at a national and international level.


Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
  • - Apply and expand on teaching experience to analyze and assess curriculum theory as well as curriculum operations.

  • - Demonstrate specialized knowledge of the most recent theories of training and physical conditioning.

  • - Design research related to the amelioration of physical performance.

  • - Assess all physical parameters related to physical performance.

  • - Supervise the physical conditioning of professional athletes and athletic teams.

  • - Apply research-based plans for the management of professional athletic careers



MA in Physical Education (Sports Management)

Program Objectives

  • - To develop skills and knowledge in Sports Management

  • - To enable graduates to apply general business principles in developing the sports industry.

  • - To give PE professionals an opportunity to manage sports events nationally and internationally


Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
  • - Demonstrate specialized knowledge of the sports management theories.

  • - Design and manage sports events both nationally and internationally

  • - Apply research-based marketing plans for sports enterprises

  • - Establish and manage professional sports facilities and centers


After Graduation
After graduating from our Department, students can develop a career in a variety of exciting areas. Since 1993, our graduates have worked in Lebanon or abroad and held jobs in positions such as: Teacher in Physical Education, Activities Director, Athletic Trainer, Cardiovascular Fitness Instructor, Dance Instructor / Aerobics Instructor, Exercise Physiology Technician, Health / Fitness Consultant, SPA / Health Club Manager, Personal Trainer, and Strength and Conditioning Coach.
