Mar Assia church excavation (Hasroun, Qadisha valley)
2021
Deir Mar Assia church
The archaeological investigation on the site of Deir Mar Assia in Hasroun (Qadicha valley) has been undertaken within the framework of the rehabilitation project managed by Era Heritage and conducted by Distruct solutions. The site consists of a double chapel dating back to the 15th century. DAM’s works consisted in uncovering the chevets’ walls and opening trenches inside and outside the chapels. The major find was the discovery of a painted cross on the northern wall together with an inscription in Ge’ez (a language used in the Ethiopian liturgy). The recovered material is still under examination.
